Nippon racing vitara vs YCP vitara

Comments Off 09 May 2009

I’m planning on turbo charging my d16z6. I’ve done a lot of research on different components trying to find my best options. I decided that I am going to use Suzuki Vitara pistons, Tuner toys H beam rods, acl or king bearings, and hastings rings. I see two different types of aftermarket vitara pistons for sale. One is YCP and the other is Nippon racing. I hear that Nippon pistons are made in japan while YCP is made in Taiwan or Korea or somewhere like that. The pistons are around the same price, 125-135 for pistons, rings, clips, and wrist pins. Searching for YCP vitara’s turned up no results, so I’m looking for input on anyone’s experience with YCP pistons and how they compare in quality to Nippon racing.

We prefer the YCP pistons. We’ve built 8 YCP- pistoned Z6/Y8s engines and 2 with Nippons…. including our 10 second Vitara-powered Y8 race car (YCP). YCP is what we recommend, based on not only reputation and proven performance from us and many others, but overall quality also. We’ve used the 75mm, 75.5mm, and 76mm YCPS and had no trouble with them, and we’ve even run them with ridiculously excessive piston to wall clearance and still had no problems. We had one problem recently with the Nippons in a Y8, but there are a few other factors that make us unable to pinpoint the pistons as the reason for the failure. The YCPS for sure take a HELL of a beating and keep on pumpin..Id say YCP!

Vitara Piston to Wall Clearances

1 Comment 08 May 2009

Im rebuilding by d15b vtec and have a set of std vitara pistons. My piston to wall clearance in my worst cylinder is about .0035. and the rest its any where from .0025-.003 is this too much? My stock pistons are something like .0015 after the hone… what are you guys running

  1. Yeah I think they’ll be alright they’re just a little loose compared to stock..but I have seen way looser tolerances with no issues in v8s
  2. haha, im runnin .007 piston / wall
  3. I went with 75.5mm because when I measured the piston to wall clearance with a 75mm vitara which are under 75mm mine measured .003″ under, the cylinder walls the smallest out of spec measured in at 2.956″ diameter and Honda’s specs are 2.950″ and they were slightly egg shaped. Add it all up I would have had about .010″ of piston to wall clearance. So I sent my pistons back to FTJ who then sent me 75.5mm piston. Thank you FTJ. Once the new pistons were here the local speed shop bored and honed my block to Honda’s specs for the 75.5 vitara pistons, which is .00040-.00016″ piston to wall clearance I believe measured at the skirt. All tolerances I got from my Chilton’s manual. If my bore was perfect at 2.950″ the Vitara pistons are still too small for my taste.
  4. The 75.5mm have a tighter piston to wall clearance. the 75s have more, but after warm up they are fine.

Thank you for checking out our site! We will be the #1 information source on boosting your Honda with Vitara Pistons!

Some general information

1. Code of piston/engine is G16b..Found in the Suzuki Vitara SOHC model and also the Suzuki Esteem(96-00)
2. They are 75mm(standard) and you use Civic rings for 75 mm pistons
3. They mate w/o any machining to any D series Rod or any D series aftermarket rods(Eagle,Crower etc..) **note that with some aftermarket rods block notching is required**
4. They have a Floating pin design VS. the press fit pin style of OEM pistons
