Fun, Cheap, Unusual Project Car?

3 Comments 13 August 2009

Howdy,
I’m looking to get a project car to soup up. Now, the most important thing is that the car is very different. I don’t want to be just another guy in a turbocharged Mitsubishi or Honda.
For example, I love cars like the ‘76 Maserati Biturbo. I’d take that in a heartbeat, it’s just really hard to find.
Let’s set the budget at $4,000.
Rare or hard-to-find is even better.

Rare and $4,000 are not synonymous…
Pick up a Triumph and drop a stroked 302 (347) into it.
    or a Lotus Seven.

Get a “Thing”, or a Sunbeam Tiger. Not sure if you can find a Tiger for $4K or not, but they are soooo cute. Maybe a Triumph, they are not seen as often as they used to be.

Personally, I’d go with a late model 75-78 Datsun 280z.. They are very collectible cars yet you can usually find one for under 4,000 in pretty good mechanical shape. They’re also pretty easy to work on. The only drawback (if you want to call it that) is that they’re 2 seaters and not very practical but, they’re a BLAST to drive.
