A friend and I have done it. We went to the local junk yard and pulled the turbo set up out of a volvo. We cut the turbo housing portion of of the manifold and butchered it to a stock honda civic manifold. The beauty of the volvo set up is that everything is all one assembly. So it was just a matter of running an oil feed, an oil return, and having a down pipe made. Which was not a big deal considering I work for meineke. We took a stock volvo turbo and are currently boosting 8psi.
its not impossible it is hard though. and trust me unless you got history in tuning and machinary and not so much in mechanics you can get parts for your neighborhood hardware store and be pushing 5-8 psi not much but it does help. but like i said its really hard i tried it because the internet instructions seemed easy enough but when it came to tuning you need to somewhat pretune it before mounting it. team lost about 4 b16 blocks due to this.
It’s not a homemade turbo, it’s a homemade turbo KIT. Meaning, they didn’t buy a premade turbo kit from someone, they pieced together their own. As much as I love Hondas, there’s no way someone would build a turbocharger only to end up using it on an Accord. It’s just not something people do, unless it’d for a company.
It is not impossible. If you have a machining background you could poddibly machine one up. Remember someone has to make them, its not a secrect.
do some reaserch on http://www.homemadeturbo.com that should give you all the answers your looking for
