It depends on how much power you want to make out of the engine and how long you want it to last. You can put a turbo on the stock engine but depending on the mileage of the vehicle and how much power you want it to hold will determine if you need to rebuild it. No matter what you do it will shorten the life of the engine and if it is a high mileage engine you will probably burn up you piston rings pretty fast. If you want to make good reliable power than you will want to replace the rods and consider putting in some low compression pistons. But this is just in the bottom end. Dont forget fuel management and your fuel system or it wont run at all. Then you will need to get it tuned. You will also have to upgrade your complete drivetrain to be able to hold the power. If you plan on dropping some serious cash go turbo. But dont think once you buy that turbo kit that your car will be set to go.
