Question About A Turbo Tax Error I Made?

6 Comments 10 August 2009

I am in the process of buying a house, the offer has been accepted, but the house has not closed as of yet. I logged into my turbo tax account online recently and was simply intending to run the numbers hypothetically to see if I could expect to receive the first time home buyer tax credit. This morning I logged into my account to find that my 2008 taxes were actually amended and accepted and that I can expect to receive the tax credit. I didn’t intend for this to happen and don’t recall hitting any final submit button or anything similiar to that. Need some advice here.

If you didn’t mail it in, it didn’t happen. You cannot file an amended return electronically, either accidentally or deliberately.
If you accidentally signed and mailed an amended return with incorrect information, do another amended return to correct it.

As others have stated, you can’t amend via efile.
However, did you ever file your 2008 return? If so was it efile or by mail?
If you efiled the original return, a second efile (of an origianl return, not a 1040x) won’t go through. If you mailed the original return, a 2nd original might get in, but, alas, will be treated as an amended return.
However, for that to happen, you also had to fudge the dates you bought the house on the form. The IRS *edits* for future dates and has been rejected bad form 5405s.

    You didn’t.
Amended returns have to be printed and mailed, cannot be efiled. Your original return was efiled, your amended return is a printed, paper return. When you do close, send in copy of HUD-1 along with amended return to avoid delays in processing of amended return/tax credit as they are being verified.
Use care in dealing with turbo tax, saving return, etc..
    Relax.

You don’t use turbo tax to run numbers. It is not a feature. So when you logged in you selected amend return and continued to file new forms. It may look as if amended papers were sent. Look closer. You are being told that the software saved changes and that you must print forms and mail. You cannot e-file amended returns on any e-filing website. They must be printed and mailed.

Well i would either push to get this deal closed soon so it wouldn’t matter, or talk to a tax adviser and see what they think you should do

That does not sound possible – any amended return has to be filed via hard copy (Form 1040X). You cannot e-file an amended return.
