3 Comments 20 February 2010

1999-2001 2.5rs vs 1999-2000 civic si. Both non turbo, both with out engine swaps. Both cars have put about the same amount of money in moding stock engines. which one is faster in a straight?

the subaru will be faster in a straight line because it has a weight advantage

The thing is having the same amount of money for parts is that Honda parts are cheaper and have a huge selection. You can spend the same amount of money on both cars, but end up with a big difference in gains. It would be a nice race since stock, the Subaru would have more power, but since they both will be modified, it would be a close race. The Honda is lighter, but FWD and the Subaru has AWD, great for acceleration.

Good question. Take some facts into account and decide.
    ‘99 si
    2580 lbs
    160 hp
    111 ft lbs/torque
    ‘99 2.5RS
2860 lbs (light for an awd)
    165 hp
    166 ft lbs/torque
The Civic only has to distribute the power to 2 wheels the Impreza has to split almost the same amount of power to 4 wheels, so theres more power being lost in the drivetrain. The Impreza weighs almost 300 lbs more than the Civic this will also hurt the performance.
But the Impreza does have 50+ ft lbs of torque and 4 wheels delivering power and that will help off the line (and power out of corners if your circut/track racing, AWD grip is awsome!).
They also have down sides, once they both are making more than 250 hp. The civic will start having traction issues and you have to start limiting the power off the line. The stock subie 5 speed trans gears are too weak and will break, you will have to replace the gears or swap it for STi trans.
Like Spyder said you wont know which car/engine benifits from the upgrades more, and prices differ between the parts for these cars greatly. But looking at these numbers I would expect the Civic to win in a drag race with the divers having the same skill level and the cars putting out the same power. But Subies are fun and usually faster to drive on the twisties, and the exhaust note sounds beasty.
