What Can I Do To Make My 1998 Honda Civic Hx More “performance”?

5 Comments 01 February 2010

I’ve got a 1998 Honda Civic HX… Got it from my grandma as a graduation gift so it’s in pristine condition… When I got it, it literally still smelt like a new car…
Anyhow I was wondering what parts i could put on it to make it faster or whatever… Some freinds were talking about new pipes, or cold air intake… Maybe even turbo… Maybe someone could list pros and cons of these… Or if there is a way to keep it how it is and just make the MPG’s higher id be cool with that… IDK already redid all the audio and stuff so it’s time to go under the hood!!!

Let’s slow things down here and consider exactly what is you’re asking about.
First of all “smelt” is a type of fish or a metal manufacturing process. The car “smelled” like a new car.
Second, good for you that you got a car as a gift – but please stop for just a second and consider what it is you’re trying to do to it. Brand new that car had 115 horsepower and 104 ft*lbs of torque. It’s a great little commuter car that no doubt gets excellent gas mileage and by the sound of it, if properly maintained, will last you a very long time.
If you go and start trying to modify the engine and get more performance out of it though you’re going to ruin the car. That engine was not made to crank out a lot of power and if you do manage to modify it to the point that it does produce some respectable numbers you’re going to cause premature wear to crucial engine components. Also noteworthy is the fact that adding a new intake and exhaust will probably gain you a solid 7-10 horsepower. You won’t even notice the difference you’ll just be more inclined to hammer the poor car into the ground.
I respect the fact that you’d like a fast car but I hope you can appreciate the fact that a Honda Civic (even the almighty Si) is NOT a fast car. Sure, with $10,000 in upgrades, a professional tune and tons of labor it can be made fast (as can ANY car out there)…but those engines and drive trains just aren’t meant to handle that power.
What you have is an excellent car in excellent condition. Don’t go and modify it so that it starts breaking and falling apart in a few years.

swap the engine for a K20 from a 2006 Civic Si….get a catback exhaust, intake and exhaust manifolds, cold air intake, performance radiator, performance radiator cap and billet oil cap…new ignition spark plugs…that’s just SOME stuff you could do…check http://www.andysautosport.com/

Depends on how much money we are working with, but my suggestions for just starting out are these:
    Injen Cold Air Intake
    Headers (megan or DC)
Exhaust (Greddy EVO II or HKS)
    Strut Bar
HKS Turbo if you’re a boss.

Well first of all it depends how far you want to go. If you want to keep it stock and drive it daily, you can upgrade a couple things like go with Cold air intake, exhaust and headers. You can’t really feel the diffrence. But if you’re planning on keeping it for a while and really want to feel the diffrence you can upgrade from the D16y5 ( wich is probibly the motor your grandmother left in there) to a B20( about $600 for motor and $200 for tranny). If you want to go turbo and you have the money go for it ebay turbo kits are about $800 if you want it to last a short while (there’s a reason it’s so cheap) or if you want better quality i would reccomend a synapse turbo kit (more expensive but worth it). If you piece a kit out you’re looking at about 3k-5k, I’m not sure if you want to go that far. It all just comes down to what you want out of it, and the money you’re willing to put into it of course. I would probibly do something simple like the engine swap if you just want it to be a little faster especially if you’re not planning on racing it. Good luck!

More performance? Are you crazy? Those cars are highly sought after just like their predecessor, the Civic VX. They get better gas mileage than many hybrids and they command a high price because of it. Also, since they have a VTEC engine, many tuners want it because any B-Series VTEC engine can be installed and plugged into it without any hassle. Mod it and you will watch that money go down the drain. People are going crazy to buy those. Check craigslist and autotrader and you’ll see what I mean. Higher MPGs? Drive it more conservatively and you will hit 50 mpg. EPA actually gave it a 45-46 mpg rating when it was new. Honda discontinued the HX in 2005. Oddly enough it was cheaper to buy than the Civic Hybrid and actually got better gas mileage too. Go figure. if you want higher mpgs, check the hyper miler website. I’m pretty sure someone on there has an HX with crazy MPG ratings.
